UAEZY repeatedly sees applicants use one word, “visa”, for several separate records. Understanding the difference prevents missed steps and false expectations.
Entry permit / employment entry route
An entry permit allows a person to enter for a stated purpose or continue a residence process. It is not the same as the final residence permit. The route depends on the sponsor, visa type and authority.
Work permit and employment contract
For many private-sector roles, the employer or authorised representative applies through MOHRE. The work permit relates to legal employment, while the employment contract records agreed work terms.
- Employer-led application
- MOHRE job offer or contract
- Role-specific documents where required
Residence permit
The residence permit is the immigration record allowing the person to live in the UAE for its validity period. Sponsored residence validity can vary by category and sponsor. It is linked to the Emirates ID process.
Emirates ID
Every UAE citizen and resident must hold an Emirates ID. It is used for identity checks and many government, banking, telecom and daily-life services. The card is not a work permit.
Labour card / personnel card
People still use “labour card” or “personnel card” informally. In current practice, users should check the official work-permit and employment records in MOHRE rather than assuming a separate plastic card is always issued.
Status amendment / change of status
Where eligible, a person already inside the UAE may complete an immigration status amendment without leaving the country. Availability depends on the current status, sponsor, Emirate and official approval.
Cancellation
A work permit, employment record and residence file can involve separate cancellation steps. Do not assume one cancellation automatically closes every linked record. Ask for official cancellation evidence.
Tourist or visit visa
A tourist or visit visa does not authorise employment. Proper work authorisation must be obtained before starting work.
FAQ
Is a work visa the same as an Emirates ID?
No. Employment authorisation, residence status and the Emirates ID are connected but separate records.
Can I work on a tourist visa?
No. A visit or tourist visa does not provide legal work authorisation.
What is “change visa” inside the UAE?
People often mean an inside-country status amendment, which is available only when the case and authority rules allow it.
