How to Change a Tourist Visa to Employment Visa Inside the UAE

The practical inside-country route, what the employer must do, what status amendment actually means, and why a tourist visa never gives permission to start work.

Quick answer

An inside-country status amendment may be possible after the employer or authorised establishment obtains the required employment and immigration approvals. The applicant needs the new entry permit and the previous visa or residence record must be handled correctly. A tourist or visit visa does not authorise work.

Can a tourist visa be changed to employment status inside the UAE?

Potentially, yes. A lawful inside-country status amendment can be available once the employer or authorised establishment has obtained the required employment and immigration approvals and a new entry permit exists.

For Dubai, GDRFA's Status Amendment service states that the sponsored person's status can be amended inside the country. Its listed requirements include copies of the sponsored person and sponsor passports, the sponsor's residence permit, the cancelled previous entry or residence record, and the new entry permit.

A tourist visa is not a work permit.

Do not start working merely because an offer letter has been signed. The correct work authorisation must be issued through the employer-led process.

The most common misunderstanding

UAEZY insight

At UAEZY, based on the questions we most often see and the official process information we review, the biggest misunderstanding is believing that “I found a job” automatically changes the tourist visa. It does not. The employer-led work-permit and immigration steps must create a new legal status.

Documents normally prepared at the beginning

  • Passport copy with sufficient validity
  • Recent passport-format photograph
  • Current tourist, visit or cancelled residence document
  • Signed official job offer or employment documentation
  • Employer establishment and authorised-signatory records
  • Attested educational or professional documents where required for the role

The UAE Government's “Preparing to work” guidance states that foreign workers should have a passport valid for at least six months and that foreign degree certificates need attestation. The exact education requirement depends on the occupation and permit category.

The inside-UAE employment route, step by step

  1. Official job offer and employer file review. The employment contract must be based on the offer accepted by both parties. Employer readiness and quota or establishment conditions are checked.
  2. Employer applies for the appropriate work permit.MOHRE issues work permits to registered establishments according to the job and permit type.
  3. New entry permit or immigration approval is created. This gives the immigration basis for the new employment residence route.
  4. Previous status is cancelled or prepared for amendment.GDRFA lists cancellation of the previous residence and possession of a new visa among the status-amendment conditions.
  5. Inside-country status amendment is submitted. When eligible, the record is changed without a border exit. This is not an informal “visa conversion”; it is an official immigration transaction.
  6. Medical fitness, Emirates ID and residence steps follow. The sequence depends on the emirate, employer and application channel.

Inside-country change versus leaving the UAE

Inside-country status amendment

Can remove the need for an exit when the new permit and previous status meet the official conditions. It carries its own government charges.

Exit and re-entry route

May still be required or chosen for certain records. Never book travel solely on a generic online checklist; the employer or authorised channel should confirm the actual route first.

Red flags before paying anyone

  • A request to begin work while remaining only on tourist status
  • No official offer or employer details
  • A promise of guaranteed approval
  • One unexplained lump-sum price with no government-fee separation
  • A request to create false education, address or employment documents

UAEZY does not issue work permits and does not replace the employer. Its role is document preparation, process coordination and plain-language tracking through the appropriate authorised route.
